The treatment of tachycardia depends on its cause.

Fever, tachycardia caused by fever can be treated with fever-reducing medicines such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin and others). If the fever is caused by a bacterial infection, antibiotics may be needed.

Loss of blood to treat blood loss, first stabilize the patient with fluids intravenously (into a vein) or blood transfusions. Then, it locates the area of ??bleeding and suturing or surgery will be corrected.

Hyperthyroidism: Hyperthyroidism can be treated with antithyroid drugs such as propylthiouracil (Propyl-Thyracil) or methimazole (Tapazole). Alternative treatments include radioactive iodine, which destroys the thyroid with radiation or removal of a portion of the thyroid gland by a surgical procedure called subtotal thyroidectomy.

Cardiac arrhythmias: Treatment depends on the cause of the arrhythmia: in some people, carotid massage in the neck region stop the problem. Other people need medications such as digitalis (Lanoxin), beta blockers, blockers, calcium channel blockers, quinidine (Cardioquin and other brand names) or flecainide (Tambocor). Some patients respond only to radiofrequency catheter ablation, a procedure that destroys the abnormal heart tissue area that triggers the tachycardia. Some patients can be treated with electrical cardioversion, a procedure that transmits the heart an electric shock to restore programmed normal heart rhythm.

Coronary artery disease: coronary artery disease may be treated with medication (nitrates, beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, aspirin) bypass surgery or balloon angioplasty.

Abnormalities of the heart valves, severe abnormalities of heart valves usually require surgical replacement of the damaged valve.

Pneumonia: If the tachycardia is caused by a blood clot in the lungs, frequent treatment is based on drugs to dissolve the clot and prevent the formation of more clots. Pneumonia or other lung problems can be treated with medication for these conditions.

When To Call a Professional

Call your doctor if you have tachycardia and not explained why. This is especially important if you have palpitations, dizziness, lightheadedness, weakness, fainting spells, fatigue, shortness of breath or chest pain.

Forecast

The long-term prognosis is usually good when tachycardia is caused by a fever, blood loss, hyperthyroidism, medication or nutrition. Many tachycardias related to heart or lung problems can be controlled with medication, surgery or other procedures.

The length of the tachycardia depends on its cause. For example, tachycardia caused by the fever will disappear when the body restore its normal temperature. Tachycardia resulting from blood loss will disappear when the patient is stabilized with liquid and/or blood transfusions by intravenous (IV).

Tachycardia as a result of hyperthyroidism or an adrenal gland tumor will disappear when it comes to this disorder. Tachycardia caused by taking certain drugs or eating a certain diet disappears quickly, usually within hours, when the body uses the chemical that causes the problem or remove the chemical in the urine.

Tachycardia caused by cardiac problems can last a long time.

Prevention

Tachycardia caused by coronary artery disease can be prevented by following steps to modify cardiac risk factors:
- eat a low fat diet
- control high blood pressure and cholesterol levels
- do not smoke
- control your weight
- exercise regularly

Tachycardia as a side effect of medication can be prevented by reducing the dose or changing medications. In general, people prone to tachycardia should avoid or limit consumption of caffeinated beverages, chocolate and alcohol.

Not all episodes of tachycardia can be prevented.

Also examine your personal medical history and ask if you had any of the conditions that can lead to tachycardia, including coronary artery disease, heart valve abnormalities, heart valve disease caused by rheumatoid fever, lung disease, thyroid disorders, medications and nutritional factors. The doctor will ask about your symptoms.

During the physical exam, your doctor will monitor your heart rate and rhythm, as well as the pulse. In tachycardia, your pulse may not match the heart sounds your doctor hears through a stethoscope. This will also check if your heart is dilated, if heart murmurs (sign of a problem in the heart valves), abnormal sounds in the lungs and physical signs of thyroid abnormalities (enlarged thyroid gland, tremors, muscle and eye wear bulging).

To assess more about your tachycardia, your doctor will have an electrocardiogram (ECG). However, as some forms of tachycardia come and go, one in the office ECG may be normal. If this is the case, is likely to perform a test called ambulatory electrocardiogram. During this test, the patient carries with it, usually for 24 hours, a portable ECG device called a Holter. If symptoms are infrequent, you may need to take this monitor for longer. You will be taught to press a button to record EKG reading when I have symptoms.

The results of physical examination is necessary to determine whether other tests, including blood tests to measure levels of thyroid hormones, an echocardiogram to monitor cardiac valve abnormalities, a coronary angiography to detect coronary artery disease and other tests. Sometimes doctors perform “electrophysiology tests” by which special catheters inserted into the heart to collect information on the patterns of electrical activity of the heart.

The heart beats regularly at a frequency of 60 to 100 times per minute, and pulse (which can be felt in the wrist, neck or other body part) matches the contractions of the ventricles of the heart, the two powerful chambers below the heart.

Tachycardia can be a normal body response to anxiety, fever, rapid loss of blood or intense physical exertion. It can also cause medical problems such as an abnormally high level of thyroid hormone, called hyperthyroidism. In some people, tachycardia is the result of a cardiac arrhythmia (an abnormal heart rate or pulse generated by the heart), coronary artery disease or a heart valve abnormality. Tachycardia can also be caused by lung problems like pneumonia or blood clots in the arteries of the lungs.

In other cases, tachycardia can be a side effect of some foods and beverages, including coffee, tea, alcohol and chocolate, as well as snuff or medicine.

Symptoms

Symptoms of tachycardia can include:
- vertigo, dizziness and fainting
- fatigue (unusual tiredness)
- palpitations (be aware that the beats are faster)
- shortness of breath

If the tachycardia is caused by a disease, the more symptoms associated with the disease. For example, people with tachycardia caused by hyperthyroidism may experience nervousness, insomnia, sweating, tremors and other symptoms related to high levels of thyroid hormones. Tachycardia caused by heart or lung disease is often accompanied by chest pain or shortness of breath or dizziness.

Any irregularity in the rhythm of contractions (called systole) and relaxation (called diastole) is what causes arrhythmias that are classified by place of origin (the atria or ventricles). There are four main types of arrhythmia are extrasystoles, supraventricular arrhythmias, ventricular arrhythmias and bradyarrhythmias.

Extrasystoles (premature ventricular contractions) are the most common form of arrhythmia. They consist of a beat ahead in relation to normal frequency. They are usually harmless and require no treatment if they occur in people in good health.

When symptoms occur feels like a sort of fluttering in the chest and the feeling that the heart has skipped a beat. Usually occur spontaneously and not because the person suffering from heart disease (even if certain heart conditions can cause premature). They can sometimes occur due to stress, when done too much exercise or when consumed in excess caffeine or nicotine.

Supraventricular arrhythmias, in turn, are tachycardia (accelerated heartbeat when) that originate in the atria or the atrioventricular (a group of cells located between the atria and ventricles). In this group are several that are: atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia and Wolff-Parkinson-White.

Atrial fibrillation
Within this first group, we will pay a little more attention to atrial fibrillation, because it is the most common type of serious arrhythmia. It consists of a very fast and irregular contraction of the atria (upper chambers of the heart). The electrical impulse that causes the heartbeat does not start at the usual place, but in another part of the atrium or pulmonary veins close and do not move in the right way. The result is that the walls of the atria fibrillate vibrate or (hence the name) very fast instead of beating normally and then they can not pump blood to the ventricles in the right way.

The two most serious complications associated with atrial fibrillation are stroke and heart failure (heart failure).
When a person suffers from atrial fibrillation, clots can form blood to accumulate in the atria that are fibrillating, instead of circular to the ventricles. If a clot breaks can reach the brain and cause a stroke. That’s why people who have it are treated with anticoagulants. Stroke can occur if a blood clot reaches an artery in the brain and blocks (blocks) the flow of blood.

Heart failure occurs because the heart can not pump blood the body needs. Atrial fibrillation can cause heart failure when the ventricles beat too fast and do not have enough time to fill and pump blood throughout the body. This causes fatigue, inflammation (swelling) of the legs and shortness of breath.

Sometimes atrial fibrillation is due to another condition that affects the heart and hypertension, coronary heart disease or rheumatic heart disease, a problem with one of the heart valves. Other causes include hyperthyroidism (excess thyroid hormone), excess alcohol or other family members have suffered from atrial fibrillation.

Other risk factors for this type of arrhythmia include:
- Age, especially after 60
- Suffering from sleep apnea
- Suffering from diabetes or chronic lung disease
- Having a serious infection

The warning signs of atrial fibrillation may include: a pounding in the chest (such as thunder, drums or jumps) frequent palpitations (the sensation that the heart has skipped a beat), shortness of breath after physical exertion , pain in the chest and even dizziness or fainting.

When these symptoms you should consult a physician for diagnosis and determine the treatment that helps restore the normal rhythm and prevent clots.

Ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation
These two arrhythmias that originate in the ventricles (lower chambers of the heart) and are more dangerous than atrial fibrillation. Fortunately, they are less frequent. In the case of ventricular tachycardia, the ventricles beat very fast speeds (well above 100), which is not allowed to fill with blood and so the heart can not distribute it to the body and oxygenate organs can be and tissues, which is dangerous if it lasts a long time. It can cause palpitations, dizziness, weakness, low blood pressure and fainting. You can convert ventricular fibrillation is an arrhythmia worse.

In ventricular fibrillation, as in the case of atrial fibrillation, the ventricles quiver rapidly and irregularly and also fail to pump blood efficiently and the result is the same as in ventricular tachycardia but much more rapid and severe. If not treated promptly because it ends with fatal cardiac arrest.

Arrhythmias can scare the person who suffers, but in many cases and especially in young people with no history of heart disease, not a serious hazard and can be treated with medication. Supraventricular arrhythmias are common in middle-aged and elderly. Usually as you get older more likely to suffer, especially atrial fibrillation. Many appear temporarily in response to emotions or normal activities, but arrhythmias can be dangerous and so it is always important when you suspect an arrhythmia than a cardiologist to assess whether treatment is needed.

The heart is a muscle that beats endlessly restless long before birth until the last second of life. Although not stop, do not always march in lockstep: sometimes slows down, others vary more rapidly as the need for oxygen in the body.

As in the dance, sometimes you lose, and we must act quickly to restore the rhythm. A change in the pattern or normal rhythm of the heart is what is known as arrhythmia. They range from harmless to serious. Here we explain how it happens and how to identify them.

Palpitations, beats you “skip” a fluttering in their chest or its opposite, irregular pauses between beats another … all these are symptoms of an arrhythmia, an irregularity in the rhythm of the heartbeat. Normally the heart beats between 60 and 100 times per minute and this is what is considered normal heart rhythm.

When the pace quickens in response to a stimulus such as stress (exercise is an example) is called tachycardia, when you slow down or slows down, as during sleep, is called bradycardia. When it beats irregularly, as already stated, is called an arrhythmia, which can be harmless or it can be serious because if it causes decreased blood flow can damage the brain, heart and other vital organs.

A beating heart is a small electrical system

Why the heart beat? So to move the blood is loaded with oxygen and nutrients throughout the body. But the blood is to push and that’s where the beats, the heart’s contractions controlled by electrical impulses.

The electrical system that regulates heart rate and rhythm of the heartbeat consists of two control areas or nodules and a number of ways in which the electrical impulse runs, so it works like any other electrical circuit, such as your home, for example. Broadly speaking, not overwhelm with details, with each beat an electrical impulse runs from the top (or atria) to the bottom (or ventricles). As the impulse moves through the tract, the heart chambers (atria and ventricles) contract and relax, boosting blood, a process that is repeated between 60 and 100 times per minute under normal conditions.

Accelerates when faced with a stressful or exciting situation. Indicates that something makes us nervous for better or for worse. Sorry when we exercise or when we are in love. It is the rhythm of the heart, known as pulse.

What is the pulse?

The pulse or heart rate is the rate at which your heart beats to pump blood throughout the body. In other words, is the number of times your heart beats per minute. When the doctor takes your pulse, usually also can tell whether your heart is strong and if blood vessels are hard or soft.

Surely you’ve felt the pulse through certain blood vessels at the surface of the skin on your wrist, your neck or upper arm. If your pulse quickens and it becomes very weak is a sign that there is any irregularity in your heart or other problems.

So how can you tell if your pulse or your heart rate is normal?

The normal adult pulse rate at rest (ie when you are resting) goes from 60 up to 100 beats per minute. However, the resting pulse rate of a well trained athlete or sportsman is lower: 40 to 60. A low pulse in healthy adults suggests that the heart works more efficiently and is in shape.

To measure yourself at home pulse, simply place two fingers on the inside of your wrist (ie on the side of the big toe) or three fingers on your neck, just below the jaw. When you feel, look at your watch and count the number of palpitations in 15 seconds. Then multiply this number by 4 and get your number of beats per minute.

Remember that there are certain factors that can affect the pulse or heart rate. Among them are:
- Your overall physical condition (if you exercise regularly or not)
- Activity Level
- Air temperature
- Emotions
- Body position (lying, sitting, standing)
- Weight and height
- Use of drugs

Stay alert for any unusual changes in your heart rate, since it may indicate certain conditions (such as your thyroid disorders, heart failure, etc.).. If when you’re resting your pulse is above 100 beats per minute, you have tachycardia, and if less than 60 beats per minute is bradycardia. Consult your doctor if you also feel dizzy, you pass out and/or fatigue.

Some people have to have an enlarged heart, which is not a disease but a symptom of other heart diseases. Read on to find out that you have a “big” heart and a big heart is not always a joy.

To John did an x-ray and discovered that his heart is bigger than normal. In girlfriend not surprised by the result, because she says that John is the nicest person in the world. But the doctor told him that in this case, regardless of the human qualities of John, what I saw on the film is something known as “cardiomegaly.”

This term is used to describe a heart that is larger than normal on a radiograph taken with X-rays. Having an enlarged heart can be a temporary condition due to pregnancy, stress or other conditions such as:

High blood pressure. This condition, if not controlled, makes your heart to beat harder to send blood throughout the body, which enlarges the muscle.

Disease of heart valves. If any of the four valves that have the heart to send blood to the correct address were to be damaged, this can cause the heart to grow.

Birth defect (a heart disease which is born). Birth defects can make it difficult for the heart to pump blood and be making a greater effort, can grow.

Cardiomyopathy or heart muscle weakness. The deterioration of the heart muscle can cause the heart to change its size.

Cardiac arrhythmia. As in the case of defects, if you have abnormal beats, the heart has to work too, so it enlarges.

Thyroid problems. the thyroid gland have a more active or less active than normal can lead to heart problems, such as enlargement.

Some of the symptoms of enlarged heart include fatigue, shortness of breath, dizziness, irregular heartbeat and coughing. If you think you have a heart problem, talk to your doctor. The enlarged heart usually can not be prevented but can be treated. Depending on the problem you have, you can prescribe medications, you could recommend any procedure and put a device on the heart or even you could do a valve replacement surgery as a last resort, we may recommend a heart transplant.

To John ran his heart medication and returned to its normal size, but that does not change the fact that still has a big heart.

Having manicured feet is a symbol of health and beauty. However, when fungal nails are the feet can show embarrass yourself. Why are the nail fungus? Here we tell you and also tell you what home remedies work to eliminate them.

The nail fungus occurs when a fungus infects one or more of your nails. The first thing you notice is a white or yellow spot under your nails, especially toenails. As the fungus progresses and goes deeper into your nail, causing it to discolor and thicken. Besides pain and discomfort, this is a problem that many people complain because it is not pleasing to the eye.

What if you have an appointment and do not want to wear shoes because you have uncovered nail fungus? This is a rather painful and can cause problems of self esteem and your relationships with the opposite sex.

While nail fungus is more common in older adults, young people do not escape from them, especially if they meet certain conditions such as:

- Excessive sweating in the feet
- Working in a humid environment
- Suffering from psoriasis
- Walking barefoot in public places that are likely to be wet like swimming pools, gyms and showers
- Wear shoes and socks that do not allow ventilation
- Having the condition known as “athlete’s foot”
- Having diabetes
- Have some minor injury to the nail or ingrown toenail
- Have circulation problems
- Having a weakened immune system

Fortunately, there are oral medications and topical treatments (local)-like creams and nail against fungi, which the dermatologist can recommend to cure this type of infection and save you from future embarrassments. However, some of these treatments are expensive and some people have no health insurance, so some are inclined to use home remedies to treat the problem of nail fungus, as vinegar and Vicks VapoRub.

Vinegar: Some studies have shown that vinegar inhibits the growth of certain bacteria. For this reason, it is believed to be effective in the treatment of nail fungus. I suggest the following: dip your feet in a mixture consisting of one part vinegar and two of warm water. Leave it there for 15 minutes to 20 minutes maximum. When finished, dry your feet well. You can do this every day if your skin is irritated. If you do, you better apply this home treatment only 3 times a week, or try increasing the amount of water in the mixture.

Vicks VapoRub: Although it may seem strange, since the Vicks is used to relieve chest congestion and nose, there are some reports that indicate it can work for the treatment of nail fungus. However, as yet unproven effectiveness with well-designed scientific studies, it is best to consult with your doctor about how often and whether you should apply this ointment on the toenail.

We do not recommend you mix the vinegar, Vicks because imagine the combination!

If your nail fungus problem persists, consult a dermatologist to start treatment with medication. Do not be discouraged, this is a problem that fortunately has a solution!
